Flapper Photo shoot

Chloe Moretz for Russian Vogue Magazine

Transforming the style of the roaring twenties not only by the clothes and hair fascination but as well by the moves of the most common dance of the time, The flapper dance. The repetition in the same human figure creates movement and flow in the photo. The repetition as well makes the viewer look more than once at the clothing, it's really great cause the viewer doesn't get lost in the emotions of the photo. The colours are very natural tones and very minimal. The background is a great contrast with the clothing and her pale skin, it makes the image stand out.

In the clothing design it was also taken in consideration the main characteristics of 1920's fashion. The waist line cut brought down on the hip line. The coat is long just above the knee. In my opinion the hair fascination is not really a typical 1920's hair fascination but with all the moves and clothing it really gives the viewer the impression that its from that period.

The Artist

Conflict:

The story consists of a conflict between the evolution of cinema. From the silent movies to the talkies. The actors from the silent movies couldn't accept the fact that people wanted the talkies. Producers were in difficulties cause people were looking forward for new faces and actors from the silent movies weren't good actors for the talkies. The actor ended up from being rich and confident to loosing all his faith and confidence in himself and poor. His pride dragged him more to his helpless side and took him quite a while that he needed the help of the women that he loved.

Harmony:

The fact that there's no other sound than music its very harmonic. The black and white film gives more harmonic feeling cause of the use of different tones in colours, its very relaxing to the eyes.

Costumes:

The costumes were a study of the period of the late 1920's to the early 1930's. In the coral dress one can see a perfect example of a 1920's day dress. The layering of the jacket, the low waist line cut placed down to the hip, pleats in the skirt and the skirt just above the knee. The front two dresses on the right are the perfect designs in textile from art deco prints. Repetition and simplification of lines. The use of fur was added to create richness and elegance to the dress.

The poster:

In the poster again we see mainly the two colours used in the film, Black and White. When one first sees the poster one draws the attention to the faces of the artists. One will immediately see the harmony in their faces, this was created with the amount of light placed on the face. After looking at their faces the colour red draws your attention. This colour red creates creates in the viewers eyes, with this conflict of colour it creates curiousity and draws your eyes to the title of the film. This poster brings you directly to the two main elements in the poster. The actors love and passion and the title.

Coco Chanel

Evening coat, ca. 1927
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (French, 1883–1971)
Silk, metallic thread
The Metropolitan museum of Art

The coat is from the art deco line she uses a French textile with pattern from Japanese kimono. The evening coat consist of three colours Black, White and Gold as highlight and richnesss to the fabric. The coat is very harmonic with the amount of balance and attention given to the perfect space. In the collar we find the three colours blocked in vertical given same space when seeing from the back. The coat consists of two layers of material on top of each other. The colours are continuous when they are layered. The black and white consists of the same amount of colour, in between the colours we find the gold in half of the amount given to the black or white. The black and the white are overlapping in between the gold to blend in the colours. All the garment is well spaced and given attention to have all same spacing. The coat is symmetrical.

L'instant Taittinger

Taittinger was a French wine family who were very famous for the production of champagne. This Art Deco poster was created by Claude Taittinger the Presedent of the company. This poster features Grace Kelly a (very  famous actress of the time) behind the huge champagne glass.

This poster is only based on two colours brownish yellow the colour of the chamapgne and black as a very bold colour. The light background gives a sense of  hamony to the poster. The shape of the triangle in the glass is also repeated in the dress. It creates a balance in the picture in the above and lower area. The picture is mainly focused on the right hand side but balanced with the writing and the faint silhouette in the shadow. The white reflections in the glass give the only sense of roundness in the glass.

The Roaring Twenties.

For me this is the period that mostly inspires me. It’s the period were art and design is well combined and designed. In fashion the ladies are always well groomed and all garments well finished touches such sequins and fur, hair always curled and styled, and always accessorized with matching chic items. I also really like the fact that at that time all the people followed same fashion line.
Art Deco and Surrealism were the arts followed at this time. Art Deco also affected the architecture. Art Deco is characterised by use of materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, lacquer and inlaid wood. Surrealism began in post-World War I European avant-garde literary and art circles, and many early Surrealists were associated with the earlier Dada movement.

Movies well the best way to make people laugh after all the pain caused by the WWI. During this time we find the greatest change of movies from the silent movies to the talkies. In these films we find the perfect images/examples for fashion and Art deco designs.

My concept for this assignment will be studying history of this period to create a transformation of the highlight of this period in a fashion line of twenty pieces. The fashion line will consist of day wear and evening wear.
