Head dresses

This headdress consists of mainly repetitive shapes of leaves that are decorated with various beading. The beading used is tranparent, pearl and diamonds. It is set on natural colours white and silver. The base is made of an alice band and feathers covers more than half of the face.

This headdress design consists of a feather and repetitive circles. Geometric shapes are inspired from Art Deco. Again the beading is silvery and transparent. Very simple and elegant.

This design is different from the others its mainly based of textile. Lace is the base of the headress.
Pearl beaading is layed on the floral design.

Seeing others work helped me more to understand different types of head dresses. The main material used is beading, feather and lace. They also included floral patterns and geometric shapes.

How to do a head dress

Before continuing any further designs I wanted to learn more about head dresses. I found a clip from the designer Ralph Pink. In this tutorial he shows how a head dress is created to fit the head. The head dresses are inspired from Art Nouveau  and Art Deco.

I  was pretty amazed how with simple metal wire he managed to create and amazing headdress with great detail. He explains very well. This gave me a very good idea of what I have to think when designing. How would it fit the head? Would it be heavy for the head? and to be careful to cover all the wire for health and safety purpose.

Creating Design

I started sketching some design, I just didn't want to think too much about what I'm designing. I just remember some characteristics and drew. I think on the whole I came up with some good ideas. The pieces that I liked are the bow on the maroon dress, I think that the simple bow gave more elegance to the dress. Accessories that are actually attached to the dress. I really like this idea cause for a women its always a hassle to find the right accessories for an outfit. But this design came up with a slight complication, cause if the accessories contain metal they will rust when washed and sending to dry cleaning won't be economic. So I came up with the idea to make the accessories removable, Like that this dress can also be dressed down for casual wear.

I particularly like the most is the green headdress. Its very simple, but yet so elegant. A simple headdress can change ones look. So from this design I have decided that instead of designing dresses I will design head dresses. The colours will be dark colours with a drastic contrast such as white and black.

The Roaring Twenties (1939)

Poster of the film

The film is produced in 1939 but is set in the 1920's. The film is about a good man that has served the country and fought for the country during the World War I. When the soldier returned back to his country,  everything has changed he found himself with no job. After several rejections, found himself working as a Taxi driver, during one of his shifts he was offered to deliver a parcel. He didn't know what it contained and ended up arrested. At court he lied to save this woman, that the parcel was for, from being jailed. This woman paid his bail. He was offered a job in fraud. He started producing alcohol and delivering it since it was not permitted in the country. He was betrayed by one of his partners and was arrested. In the meantime he was in love with a woman that was in love with an other man. The film ends by the protagonist killing his partner to save the husband of his loved one. He was shot to dead.

The film was very interesting cause one sees the history of the 1920's. The film is a complete history from the story itself to the clothing, cars and lifestyle. All the rich people gathered in bars, drinking, smoking, watching performances and dancing. There's a drastic change in the protagonist character, In the beginning of the film he was a hero, fighting for his country. While he ended up in fraud and being jailed. But in the end of the film he changes again his character, he faces all his hurts and fight for the person that made his loved one happy. He died as a hero for his loved one.

Watching this film, it reminded me of a cartoon character of the Warner Brother 'Rocky'. The gangster that owns  a car from the 1920's ready to shoot someone and always smoking. This character resembles the character of Humphrey Bogart.
Humphrey Bogart

'Bugs and Thugs'

For me this transformation is very interesting. Rocky kept his character, he portrays himself and a very courages and powerful man, but at the end he is always beaten by bunny. Same as the film Humphrey Bogart always showed that he is more  powerful than James Cagney but at the end he shot to dead by him. Humphrey was always very prompt to shoot someone and Rocky is always feeling powerful with the gun and always shooting.
The Cacharel Fashion Show Fall 2012

Hair:
During the 1920's hair was always cut into 'bob'. It started of from the first world war, cut bob with a fringe and straight. It was later developed with curls, finger waves and Marcel waves. In this fashion show hair is all up styled to seem that its cut short. A clip on the side is added to create the effect of the finger wave.

Patterns:
Patterns are inspired from Art Deco. Geometric shapes are used, including repetitive patterns creating symmetry in garments. Two floral patterns are included in the fashion line. One of the pattern includes hues of red and repetitive pattern. While the black and with floral print seems much more of layered flower enlarging itself.

Clothing:
Very few characteristics are portrayed in this new 2012 fashion line from the 1920's. The main characteristic was that all dresses and coats are just above the knee. In the plain garments we find geometric shapes in the cuts and shapes in dresses. The main colours used are primary colours (blue, red and yellow) and black and white. Several different neck lines are used from low V necks to round necks and polo necks. This diversity in all the garments kept the viewer interested in the originality of the designers.

Shoes:
Shoes are very simple, from heeled pumps to 'Mary Jane' shoes with added straps. But when looking from the side of the shoes on sees a transformation in the heel. Half of the heel is joined with the arch of the shoe.

'Mary Jane' Shoes with heel attached to shoe arch  with several straps.

In my opinion this is a great example of transformation. One of the main things that our mind keeps us consistent with the inspiration of the fashion line from the 1920's is the hair. The rest of the ideas are twisted to new modern ideas that if one sees the garment on its own can barely say from where the inspiration came from. Its a well combination of pattern from the same period of time use especially in architecture and interior decoration.
